Spain has shown a special commitment to AIDS in several areas, including: reducing stigma and discrimination, promote gender equality, improve health services and the development of HIV prevention.
Executive Director of UNAIDS in Spain was 9 to 12 February to meet with government officials to find ways to develop and strengthen cooperation to find an answer to the epidemic.
During his visit, Dr Piot met with Spanish Minister for Health, Elena Salgado, in Madrid to discuss collaboration between UNAIDS and the Spanish government and to inform the latest developments in new -reduction aids.

Dr. Piot also visited the Basque Country, where he met with members of the Basque Government, including President Juan Jose Ibarretxe, the Minister for Health, Gabriel Inclan, and the Minister of Housing and Social Welfare, Javier Madrazo.

During the visit, Dr Piot has signed an agreement of cooperation in a number of years between UNAIDS and the Basque Government. The deal, the first of its kind between the two institutions, focuses on two specific areas of support and cooperation, the first is the intensification of HIV prevention in Central and Eastern Europe and the second support of UNAIDS, the control AIDS in Rwanda to enlarge.
